FAQs
Getting Started
Does my diffuser need water?
No — that's the whole point of it. Our diffusers atomize 100% pure essential oil using air pressure, so you never add water. Adding water or carrier oil will stop the atomizer from working and can damage the unit. Just add oil to the glass chamber and switch it on.
How do I charge it, and how long does a full charge take?
Charge with the USB-C cable provided, paired with a standard phone charging head — no proprietary charger is required. A full charge takes about 3–4 hours. The indicator light turns steady green when complete. For transport safety, new units leave the factory with a deliberately low charge, so please charge it fully before first use — otherwise battery life out of the box will seem short.
What do the indicator lights mean?
| Light | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 🔴 Red, flashing | Low battery — charge the unit before use |
| 🔴 Red, steady | Charging |
| 🟢 Green, steady | Fully charged — ready to use |
If the red light is flashing and the unit won't run, that's the low-battery indicator, not a fault. If it stays red for several hours without turning green, contact us.
Using Your Diffuser
How many drops of essential oil should I add?
10–15 drops per use. Don't overfill — pour just enough to sit at the base of the glass tube and keep the chamber upright. Adding too much is the most common cause of gurgling or spitting.
What room size does it cover?
Each model scents up to 600 sq ft (≈55 m²) — enough for a living room or open-plan office. In smaller rooms like a bedroom or bathroom, simply use a lower mist setting.
Is it noisy? Can I make it quieter?
The precision air pump behind our cold-mist atomization produces a soft mechanical hum — roughly under 40 dB, about the level of a refrigerator. That gentle sound is normal, and it's what allows the oil to diffuse without heat or chemical change. To reduce it further, turn the knob to the left-hand low settings, which run quieter and gentler.
Is there a timer or auto shut-off? Can I leave it running overnight?
Yes. Lab and Larmes offer four modes (2H / 4H / 8H / continuous) with auto shut-off; Scarecrow has a 3H timer; Nomad Pro offers 1H / 2H / 3H / continuous. The auto shut-off means the unit is safe to leave running overnight — but we don't recommend it. Continuous diffusion causes "olfactory fatigue", so you stop noticing the scent even while oil is still being used.
How long does the battery last? Can I use it in the car?
With normal daily use, expect roughly 7–10 days per charge. All models are wireless and charge via USB-C. The Nomad Pro is designed for the car: it fits standard cup holders, is waterless (no leakage, no condensation, no spills on bumpy roads), and offers 9 mist/timer combinations.
Can I use it while charging?
Yes — the unit works while charging, so you're never stuck waiting. Plug the USB-C cable into a charging head on mains power, or run it from a power bank for full portability. Charging and diffusing at the same time causes no harm.
Why can I barely see any mist?
This is normal, especially on the lower settings. The mist is a fine, dry micro-mist — very different from the wet "fog" of an ultrasonic unit, and hard to see with the naked eye. To confirm it's working, hold the unit against a dark background or shine a phone flashlight over the opening and you'll see the particles.
The scent seems to fade after a while — is something wrong?
No, this is olfactory fatigue, and it's completely normal. Your brain adapts to a constant background scent and stops registering it, even though the diffuser is working at full strength. To reset it: power off and take a 15-minute break, or rotate between two or three oils. Stepping out of the room and coming back works too.
Essential Oils & Scents
Which oils can I use? Can I add water or carrier oil?
Use 100% pure essential oils. Never add water or carrier oil — the unit atomizes neat oil only, and mixing in base oils will clog the nozzle and stop the mist. Our diffusers are also compatible with fragrance oils and alcohol-based perfumes.
Are there any oils I should avoid?
We don't recommend running very thick, resinous oils on their own (sandalwood, patchouli, myrrh, vetiver, cedarwood) — they atomize weakly and clog the nozzle faster. If you'd like to use one, blend a few drops into a lighter, high-flow oil such as citrus or eucalyptus. Avoid pre-mixed blends that already contain carrier oils.
Does it come with essential oil? Can I use my own brand?
The diffuser currently ships without oil, you can use any high-quality brand. There are no proprietary cartridges: simply add your own oil to the glass chamber.
Why does it use oil faster than my old diffuser? How long does a bottle last?
Because it diffuses 100% pure oil rather than an oil-and-water mix, nothing is diluted — so each session gives far stronger coverage and longer-lasting scent. That's the trade-off for the performance. As a guide, 10–15 drops per session means a 10 ml bottle lasts roughly 2–3 weeks with normal daily use, a 20 ml bottle about 1–1.5 months, and a 30 ml bottle 2–3 months. Intermittent settings stretch it further.
The scent is too strong — how do I tone it down?
Use the two softer settings on the left, which deliver shorter misting bursts at lower motor intensity, or reduce the number of drops and set a timer. The two settings on the right give longer, more intense bursts.
Cleaning & Maintenance
How do I clean it, and how often?
Clean every 1–2 weeks with regular use, and always recommended before switching to a different oil.
Routine clean: wipe the inside of the glass chamber and the nozzle with a cotton pad or swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol, let it air-dry for 5 minutes, then refill.
Deep clean (monthly, or before storing for 2+ weeks): fill the empty glass chamber with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol, run the device for 10–15 minutes to dissolve lingering oil residue, then discard the alcohol and let it air-dry.
What should I clean it with? Can I use soap and water?
Use isopropyl alcohol (75–95%) or high-proof ethanol. Don't use soap and water — water beads off oil and soap leaves its own film, and liquid near the wood body can damage it. Keep the wooden surfaces dry and clean only the glass chamber and nozzle with alcohol.
Can I replace the nozzle, or buy one separately?
Yes — the nozzle is replaceable and available to purchase separately. With routine alcohol cleaning it rarely needs changing. The exception: if the unit was stored for a long time without being cleaned first, and the residue has hardened into a blockage that alcohol can't shift, replacing the nozzle is the recommended fix — don't try to force it clear.
What if the glass chamber breaks?
Glass broken by accidental damage isn't covered by the warranty, but you don't need a new diffuser. Replacement glass chambers are available separately — a more economical and more eco-friendly route. Email us with your order number and a photo, and we'll help you order one. Our replacement chambers use a standard ~5 mm interface and fit the same class of waterless nebulizing diffusers, so they aren't locked to a single model.
Troubleshooting
The light is green but there's no mist at all
A steady green light means the battery is fine — so with no mist at all, the fault is most likely the motor (air pump) rather than the battery. One quick check first: empty the chamber, add a little isopropyl alcohol, and see whether it mists. If the motor doesn't run at all, contact us with your order number and a short video. Motor failure is covered by our 1-year warranty for free replacement.
The mist output has dropped
After weeks of use, oil residue can narrow the nozzle. Run a short clean: empty the chamber, add a little isopropyl alcohol, let it mist for a couple of minutes, then empty and air-dry before refilling. Low room temperature (thickening the oil) or a low oil level can also reduce output — try gently tilting the unit to redistribute the oil.
It's gurgling or spitting oil
It's almost always too much oil — keep it to 10–15 drops, resting just below the nozzle — or a thick or cold oil. Warm the glass chamber in your palm for a minute, or lighten a heavy oil with a few drops of citrus. If it persists, a quick alcohol clean clears the residue narrowing the air path.
Why is oil leaking?
Check three things: the chamber wasn't tightened fully, the unit is tilted more than 45°, or it's overfilled. The diffuser is designed for upright use only — the physical atomization design relies on gravity feeding the intake tube, so never place it horizontally or upside down, and always run it on a flat, stable surface. Fix the cause and the leak stops.
What if water gets into the unit?
Pour the water out, wipe it dry, and it will work normally again — a small amount of water won't permanently damage the unit. Do this promptly rather than leaving it sitting wet. Please note this is a recovery step, not permission to diffuse water: never add water or carrier oil to the chamber for normal use.
Battery & Charging
Can I replace the battery myself? What if it degrades?
No — the battery is a non-standard (custom) cell, and we don't recommend replacing it yourself. An incorrect cell can damage the unit or create a safety risk. If battery degradation means your diffuser can no longer be used normally, contact us: rather than a battery swap, we offer a discounted price on a brand-new unit, which is the faster and safer route. Under the 1-year warranty, battery failures are covered by free replacement.
Is it safe to leave it charging or plugged in?
Yes. The unit charges via standard USB (5V) with no heating element, so the body stays at room temperature, and auto shut-off stops operation when the timer ends. We still recommend unplugging it when it won't be used for a long period.
